Verilog, VHDL, SystemC and FPGA Training
Blue Pacific Computing is a training company specializing in the Hardware Description Languages and FPGA's.
For the past ten years we have been teaching Verilog, VHDL, and SystemC
for the University of California at San Diego and at companies such as
Synopsys, Cadence, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Lockheed Martin, Rockwell,
Alcatel, Nortel, Mitel, Nokia, Philips, ARM and many others.
We have recently added FPGA design.
The Book: Hardware Design for Software People in the SoC Era
Steve Watkins, one of the co-founders, has written a book to support our training:
Hardware Design for Software People in the SoC Era: Verilog, VHDL, SystemC and Matlab*.
The book was written with software engineers, programmers and managers in mind who want to understand
chip and product design at the Electronic System Level (ESL) in the System-on-a-Chip (SoC) Era.
It emphasizes hands-on
lab projects in Verilog, VHDL and SystemC using free EDA design tools, with a special emphasis
on FPGA design. It is also intended to help managers and engineers struggling with global
resource issues, such as managing outsourcing or remaining employed in the wake of
outsourcing.

Ordering The Book
The book is available from the UCSD Bookstore for $30. It is currently available only from UCSD,
but we hope to have it in other bookstores in the coming months. To best way to order the book is
by phone. It can be ordered online, but their online process is not user friendly. To order:
- Call the UCSD Bookstore at (800) 520-7323
- Tell the sales person you want to order
Hardware Design for Software People in the SoC Era
by Steven Watkins from the UCSD Extension Textbook Section
- UCSD Bookstore hours: Mon-Thurs:8am-7pm Friday:8am-6pm Saturday:10am-5pm Sunday:12noon-5pm

The article provides some back ground information on Blue Pacific and our hopes for the book.
UCSD Classes
Steve and Kam have taught many classes at UCSD Extension in San Diego, California.
They are not teaching classes this quarter.

to see the latest schedule of UCSD Extension classes under Semiconductor Design
in the Engineering Section.
On-Site and Public Seminars
Blue Pacific also offers on-site and public "Hardware Design for Software People" Seminars.
No public seminars are currently scheduled.
for more information on these seminars or contact Blue Pacific.
All the seminars are based on the book,
and provide an introduction to all four Hardware Description Languages
(Verilog, VHDL, C/C++ and Matlab*), and the basic hardware IC technologies
(ASIC's, Structured ASIC's, FPGA's and ASSP's/Platforms).
About Blue Pacific
Blue Pacific Computing was founded in 1996 in San Diego by Steve Watkins and Kam Wong
to provide training, ASIC consulting services and low-cost EDA tools.
Kam has over 15 years experience in the semiconductor and wireless system areas.
He received a B.S. in Computer Engineering from UCSD
and an M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from UCSB.
Kam recently founded Silicon Whiteboard. See
www.siliconwhiteboard.com
for more information.
Steve has over 25 years experience in the semiconductor and wireless system areas.
He received a B.S. from the California Institute of Technology,
an M.S. in Computer Science from UCSD
and a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from UCSD.
He is spending most of his time at Qualcomm doing RF and mixed-signal modeling
with Cadence AMS.
He is also a distributor for Market America, a global Internet-based company
with a broad range of products and services, ranging from Web development and telecom to
health care. See

for more information.
Steve is continuing his music career on a part-time basis playing rock, roots and blues
with the Railheads. The Railheads have recorded three CD's,
and they occasionally play local San Diego bars and coffee houses. See
